Experience Global Youth Service Day's 25th Anniversary on Saturday, April 27, 2013!

 For the 12th year in a row, Youth Service America has selected Family Service of Roanoke Valley as a Lead Agency for Global Youth Service Day.
This year's themes will focus on anti-violence, multiculturalism, safe driving and healthy living.

Feature Event: Kindness Starts with Me Movement and Anti-violence Walk
Not your ordinary walk! People of all ages will walk to speak out against violence, contribute to a group art project and participate in a variety of activities.  This will be an unforgettable afternoon that honors victims and pledges kindness. 

12:30pm: Registration and Welcoming Ceremony at Hurt Park Elementary School

1:30pm: Walk begins in Hurt Park Neighborhood and will conclude at Wasena Park and Pavilion

 

Disaster Preparedness American Red Cross Blood Drive

Have you considered becoming a blood donor?  Are you at least 16 years of age? 
Contribute to your community's blood supply or assist other blood donors with the process.  Both roles
are crucial to saving lives!

*Blood drive will be held on Friday, April 26 at Tanglewood Mall from 1:00-6:00pm* 

 

Poverty Prevention   CLOSED!!!

Habitat for Humanity, Saturday, April 27 from 8:00am-2:00pm
Help build a home for a family in need (must be at least 16)

 

Food preparation and serving lunch: 10:30am-1:30pm

 

Elderly Outreach   CLOSED!!!
Raleigh Court Assisted Living or Our Lady of the Valley Assisted Living
Play games, socialize and have fun while spending time with the residents


Volunteers for Veterans
at the VA Medical Hospital   CLOSED!!!

Children’s Health and Welfare     CLOSED!!!
Friday Night Friends at Cave Spring Baptist Church, Friday, April 26 from 6:00-9:00pm
Spend the evening playing games with children who have special needs 

West End Center for Youth, Saturday, April 27 from 12:30-3:00pm
Volunteers will participate in a group art project by painting individual tiles to be designed into a mural


Education and Awareness
Project Sticker Shock  CLOSED!!!
Place stickers on alcohol containers in local stores displaying a warning about the penalties for providing alcohol to anyone under 21 years of age 


Go Green: Environmental Enthusiasts   CLOSED!!!
Clean Valley Council, Using environmental-friendly spray paint, volunteers will "stencil" messages onto community storm-drains about protecting waterways from waste draining into our rivers


Drug Take-Back Day
, Saturday, April 27 from 10:00am-2:00pm
Be part of this national event and assist with the local Drug Take-Back collection to keep our water safe and prevent the abuse of medications. 


Greenway Clean-Up
Celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up one of Roanoke’s Greenways that benefits everyone!


Hope Tree Family Services
Assist in a landscaping/beautification project to benefit this historic and charitable organization located in Salem, VA


RCGA
Hurt Park Community Garden

Plant fruits and vegetables to help the community garden plots thrive to provide organic nourishment in our community.


Animal Activists
Do you have a passion for animals?   CLOSED!!!
Assist with animal care at one of two local shelters: Angels of Assisi or Roanoke Valley SPCA 

Harmony Farms, April 27 from 9:30-11:30am
Home to over 200 cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and goats.  This sanctuary is a great way to get involved to end cruelty to farm animals and promote compassionate living through rescue, education and advocacy. 


Mill
Mountain Zoo
Participate in a variety of assignments that will help benefit you and the zoo

 

In line with the mission of FSRV, Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is meant to empower youth ages 12-25 to impact their communities through volunteer efforts. GYSD is the largest volunteer initiative in the world. Youth Service America (YSA) and State Farm sponsor GYSD in Southwest Virginia.
